Leopold Professor and Chair, Ophthalmology at the University of California, Irvine School of Medicine; the director?of the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute, UC Irvine School of Medicine; the vice chairman of clinical ophthalmology at UCI; the director of refractive, cornea and cataract surgery at UCI; and professor of ophthalmology and biomedical engineering at UCI.

Internationally known for his research and clinical expertise in the fields of cataract surgery, corneal transplantation, and refractive surgery, Dr. Steinert has strong interest in ophthalmic lasers.? He was one of the first U.S. ophthalmologists to engage in a clinical trial of the therapeutic applications of the excimer laser ? an ultraviolet laser used in LASIK surgery ? that can reshape the eye surface.? His current research focus is the applications of femtosecond?(a?speed one billionth of one millionth of a second)?laser technology for use in corneal transplantation.

Dr. Steinert received his MD degree from Harvard Medical School and completed training in ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye & Ear Infirmary in Boston.? He has published more than 120 peer-review journal articles and is named in both?America’s Top Doctors?and?Best Doctors in America?in the three areas of cataract, cornea, and refractive surgery.? In addition, he is past president of the American Society of Cataract and Refractive Surgery, sits on the editorial boards of four major peer-review journals, and is an examiner for the American Board of Ophthalmology.
