DEF supports translational research projects through both clinical and laboratory investigation. The goal is to gather and test information and technology that will eventually help diagnose, treat and cure retinal and corneal eye disease.

To achieve this goal, DEF is supporting the physician and laboratory researchers affiliated with the the Gavin Herbert Eye Institute at the University of California, Irvine (UCI) as well as other outstanding scientists around the world.

Macular degeneration is approaching epidemic proportions as baby boomers age, leading to DEF’s support of two major research initiatives, an AMD Genetics Program and a Stem Cell Retinal Regeneration Program.
