Most of these diseases have a strong genetic component and the latest in genetic research is being applied to their study thanks to The Discovery Eye Foundation (DEF).
DEF is currently funding research lead by M. Cristina Kenney, M.D., Ph.D. to identify genes involved in Age-related Macular Degeneration and to investigate the ways specific genes affect the clinical outcome and response to treatment of individual patients. The hope is to be able to tailor specific treatments to those who will benefit most from a particular treatment.
- DEF scientists have corroborated and further characterized the increased risk of AMD in patients with genetic changes in their complement factor H gene.
- Ongoing research is investigating the role of mitochondria in the development and progression of AMD, diabetic retinopathy and eye abnormalities of aging.
- Understanding the genetic causes of AMD, diabetic retinopathy and aging will lead to new avenues of research and strategies for treatment of these conditions.
- It will also help to delineate the genetic risk factors that make some patients more sensitive or more resistant to macular degeneration, diabetic retinopathy and the ravages of aging.
