The Discovery Eye Foundation (DEF) was founded in 1970 by Rita and Morris Pynoos as The Discovery Fund after their son Jon was diagnosed with keratoconus. As a vital catalyst for discovery and research, DEF has enjoyed the spotlight among medical, academic and philanthropic organizations for many years.
The DEF research laboratories were originally located at the University of Southern California, then moved to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center and now reside on the campus of the University of California at Irvine. The research laboratories were later renamed the "Morris S. Pynoos Eye Research Laboratories" in honor of Mr. Pynoos' support and commitment.
Through the establishment of the National Keratoconus Foundation (NKCF) and the Macular Degeneration Partnership (MDP) DEF has worked to provide the public with up-to-the-minute, unbiased information on keratoconus and age- related macular degeneration. DEF outreach programs provide information in a variety of formats including websites, free publications, regular newsletters, support groups and telephone access to healthcare professionals.
Today, poised on the brink of future discovery, DEF is committed to expanding the work it has catalyzed in the fields of patient outreach, scientific research and patient care. Furthermore, through a global network of research institutions and patient care groups, DEF is committed to nurturing collaborative research efforts and patient outreach advances for years to come. |
